Which sunscreen is suitable for sun allergies
Sun protection is particularly important for people with sun allergies. / Which sunscreen is suitable for sun allergies
But not every product is suitable. Which sunscreen helps with sun allergy.
Those who consistently protect their skin from UV rays in the event of an acute sun allergy can expect to get rid of the symptoms within a week. Consistent sun protection is also effective as a preventive measure against sun allergies. Sunscreen is almost indispensable.
Because not all skin-covering clothing keeps UV light out sufficiently. And even shade that offers good sun protection cannot completely prevent UV radiation. In order to protect the skin as best as possible, it is therefore always advisable to use a suitable sunscreen if you are allergic to the sun.
Countless sunscreens are commercially available. In order to find out which sunscreen is suitable for sun allergies, you need to take a closer look at the packaging: Among other things, the sun protection factor (SPF) is specified there. This should be at least 30.
In addition, it should be ensured that the sunscreen in the case of a sun allergy filters out UV-A rays as well as UV-B rays. This so-called broadband filter is important because UV-A rays are the main trigger for sun allergies. Whether a sunscreen also protects against UV-A light is often noted on the packaging in the form of a circle with the inscription “UVA”.
Good to know
A broadband filter in the sunscreen is not only important for sun allergies, but is also recommended to protect against sunburn.
Also of interest is what type of UV filter the sunscreen contains for sun allergies. Most sunscreens contain both chemical and physical UV filters.
Physical UV filters contain mineral pigments that reflect the UV rays that hit the skin.
Chemical UV filters contain substances that penetrate the skin and absorb the UV rays there.
People with sensitive skin often tolerate physical sunscreens better than chemical ones. In the case of a sun allergy, sun creams that only contain physical UV filters are preferable.
Some sunscreens contain the antioxidant alpha-glucosylrutin in addition to the UV filter. This combination can increase the protective effect of the sunscreen in case of sun allergy. In addition, photolyases seem to be useful ingredients: These are special proteins (so-called enzymes) that help to repair damage to the genome caused by UV rays.
On the other hand, other additives (such as emulsifiers, fragrances, colorings or preservatives) in sunscreen are often problematic for particularly sensitive skin. In the case of a special form of sun allergy, Mallorca acne, certain – especially greasy – cosmetics are even jointly responsible for the skin reaction. It is therefore advisable to use oil-free sunscreens without such additives.
