The Ukrainian army apparently used information from US secret services in several cases for its successful attacks on Russian generals. This is reported by the “New York Times”, citing unnamed senior US military personnel. The Ukrainian army claims to have killed 12 Russian generals through targeted fire since Russia’s war of aggression began in February.
Specifically, according to the report, the US is tracking down the locations of “mobile headquarters of the Russian army” and sharing this information with the Ukrainian armed forces. This then enabled the Ukrainians to attack the command posts with artillery.
“Defense Information”
Pentagon spokesman John Kirby broadly acknowledged that his country was providing Ukraine with information “that it needs to be able to defend itself.” However, one does not comment on the details. The US National Security Council emphasized that the US’ primary concern in providing intelligence information is not to kill Russian generals.
Security Council spokeswoman Adrienne Watson also confirmed that data from the US intelligence services would be passed on to Ukraine. But she also emphasized: “We do not provide any information with the intention of killing Russian generals.”
Generals had to go to the front themselves
Ukrainians have repeatedly reported killing Russian generals on the ground since the invasion of Ukraine began on February 24. The information was partially confirmed by the Russian side. For example, in early March, the city government of the southern Russian city of Novorossiysk reported that General Andrei Sukhovetsky, deputy commander of the 41st Army, had died “heroically” in Ukraine.
Because of the difficulties of the Russian advance in the first weeks of the war, many generals had to go to the front themselves, putting themselves at risk of being hit.
No information about Russian Chief of Staff
According to the New York Times, the US sources denied having passed on information about a visit to the front by Russian Chief of Staff Valery Gerasimov.
According to the Ukrainian army, several high-ranking officers were killed in a Russian headquarters near the city of Izyum last week. According to US information, however, Gerasimov had left eastern Ukraine beforehand.
