A suspicious looking car resulted in several streets being closed in the downtown Union Square area of New York Late Thursday and early Friday, after the vehicle was seen to have two gasoline canisters at the back.
New York City Police have confirmed that the car which was parked at Irving Place, posed no threat after the vehicles owner was found.
The police was called to the scene of the parked vehicle after reports came in of a suspicious looking car which had two two gasoline canisters at the back seat.
The bomb squad was called to the scene and several streets and blocks were evacuated and cordoned off in the Union Square area.
Reuters reported that an Oldsmobile Cutlassmodel 1991 had caused the scare.
One police officer who declined to give his name said, there was no bomb “just someone who did something they didn’t know was wrong.”
There was special concern over the vehicle as it was parked in front of the headquarters of the electric utility Con Edison.
Moreover, the city has been on strict alert after the failed May 1st bombing attempt in the Times Square region in which, Shahzad Faisal, a Pakistani-American was arrested and charged with an attempting to use a bomb for mass killing.
