A series of suicide bombing attacks that shook about 15 Iraqi cities today killed 69 people and injured over 230.

The reports highlighted that most of the deaths took place in the southern city of Kut, on what was considered the bloodiest day of the year.

The deadliest attack was a double bombing that killed 40 and injured 65 in Kut, 160 kilometers southeast of Baghdad, so the reports informed.

It was a very violent morning, with car-bomb and other attacks, shootings and ambushes all over the country, stated the Interior Ministry of Iraq.

The interior ministry added that seven members of the security forces died due to three car-bomb explosions in two cities south of the Iraqi capital.

The most serious of those three attacks was one involving a car full of explosives that exploded near a police station in downtown Nayaf that killed four policemen and injured 12, and damaged buildings nearby.

The media reported that one person died and 18 were injured by two explosions in the northern city of Kirkuk.

In Tikrit (North) three men attacked building formerly owned by the late former president Saddam Hussein, now a government headquarters, killing two police officers and the chief of a special unit, and injuring 10 officials.

This relative lull, however, is not forever. As soon as the Americans leave, an explosion of violence will occur. The pullback will create a power vacuum, to be filled by whoever comes on top in Iraq’s infighting.”

Iraq War : Fate of American Troops

The Iraqis themselves are in stark disagreement over whether the American military should stay on as the Iraq War still continues in its own fashion. Some believe it should. Others, including Vice President Tareq Al Hashimi, express that rather than solving security problems, the American military presence makes them worse and must therefore come to an end.

The 47 thousand or so American troops in Iraq would be replaced by approximately as many military advisors and instructors in the coming months.
