House of Representatives remains with the Republicans
The future US President Trump will be able to rely on a majority in both chambers of Congress at the start of his term.
As Reuters/Edison reports, the Republicans won at least 218 seats in the House of Representatives.
According to calculations by Edison/Reuters, the US Republicans will hold the majority in the House of Representatives. Accordingly, the party of President-elect Donald Trump will have at least 218 of the 435 votes in the Congressional Chamber. Nine races are still open.
The Republicans have already secured the majority in the other chamber, the Senate. This means that they control the presidency and the entire Congress at least until the midterm elections in two years.
Great room for maneuver for Trump
The strong power base in Congress gives Trump great political room for maneuver. With the majority in both chambers of Congress, it will be easier for him to get key legislative proposals through Parliament from January without major opposition from the Democrats.
The confirmation of government officials and judges is also likely to be faster, which will make it much easier to implement his political agenda. This removes an important barrier to authoritarian tendencies that are feared in another Trump term.
“Decisive victory”
“This was a decisive victory, supported by the entire nation,” said Republican House Majority Leader Mike Johnson, who is expected to retain this post in the future. “People want us to implement our ‘America First’ policy now.”
Trump’s agenda includes the mass deportation of undocumented immigrants, significant tax cuts and a further reduction in government regulation of corporations.
