A British soldier has been beheaded in a barbaric attack by two men on a street outside Woolwich army barracks in South East London. In the shocking scene, one of the killers addressed witnesses saying “you will never be safe.”
In broad daylight two men in their mid-20s attacked a man dressed in a military uniform killing him and apparently trying to behead him while shouting “God is greatest” in Arabic, according to witnesses.
The UK government has confirmed that the victim if the attack was a member of the British armed forces, the BBC reported.
Shocking footage recorded by witnesses during the carnage and made public by ITV shows a man holding a meat cleaver with blood on his hands using jihadist rhetoric to justify the violence.
“We swear by almighty Allah we will never stop fighting you,” the attacker said, with the body of the victim lying just yards away. “The only reason we have done this is because Muslims are dying every day.”
“This British soldier is an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth,” the attacker added, apparently referring to British military efforts in Afghanistan.
The attackers did not even try to flee the crime scene, brandishing guns and urging the witnesses to call the police and asking pedestrians to take pictures of them “as if they wanted to be on TV or something,” according to witnesses.
After the officers arrived the two perpetrators were shot and transported to separate London hospitals. The victim was dead before police arrived on the scene.
“I apologize that women have had to witness this today, but in our land our women have to see the same,”the suspect, clad in a dark hooded jacket and a black hat, continued in the video. “You people will never be safe. Remove your government, they don’t care about you.”
Counter-terrorism officers are leading the investigation into the “shocking and horrific” murder as the Prime Minister meets his top advisers to address potential security implications.
Relatives of the dead soldier are believed to have been informed but he has yet to be named.
Military commanders have told troops not to wear their uniforms until further notice, according to Media sources.
Scotland Yard’s police commissioner, Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe, confirmed that the two men had been arrested.
“We understand concern about the motivation and we will work tirelessly to uncover why this occurred and who was responsible. I understand people want answers, but I must stress we are in the early stages of investigations,” he said.
Two suspected Muslim fanatics attacked the man in the street a short distance from the Royal Artillery Barracks after apparently knocking him down with their car.
Witnesses said they set about the soldier with a number of weapons, which appeared to include knives and a meat cleaver, while shouting the name of “Allah”.
They apparently encouraged passers-by to video them. One of the alleged attackers was filmed wielding a bloodied meat cleaver, saying: “We must fight them as they fight us. An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth.
“I apologise that women have had to witness this today, but in our land our women have to see the same. You people will never be safe. Remove your government, they don’t care about you,” he said.
In another clip, the man can be heard adding: “You think David Cameron is going to get caught in the street when we start bussin’ our guns? You think politicians are going to die?
“No it’s going to be the average guy, like you, and your children.
“So get rid of them. Tell them to bring our troops back so you can all live in peace.”
Armed officers arrived 20 minutes after police received an emergency call about the attack and shot two men. One is said to be in a serious condition.
Images of the scene showed three men lying in the street, surrounded by discarded weapons and splashes of blood.
Extra officers remained on duty in Woolwich overnight and security has been stepped up at military barracks across the capital.
Forensic officers were still on the scene on Thursday morning and the area remained cordoned off. The car used in the attack was taken away during the night.
After it became clear through eyewitness accounts that the attackers had political and religious motives, the Government held a so-called Cobra emergency response meeting, which will be followed by another this morning.
David Cameron described the attack as “truly shocking” and returned to London early from France, while the Home Secretary Theresa May said it was “sickening and barbaric”.
Riot police had to contain an English Defence League demonstration in Woolwich, while elsewhere two mosques were attacked.
One witness, identified as James Heneghan, said he and his partner saw two black men attack a young man of around 20 in a Help for Heroes T-shirt with kitchen knives like he was “a piece of meat”.
“They were hacking at this poor guy, literally,” he told LBC radio. “They were hacking at him, chopping him, cutting him.”
The barracks, also known as the Woolwich station, houses a number of the King’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery and independent companies of the Grenadier and Coldstream Guards.
Leading figures came forward to express their horror and offer sympathies to the victim’s family.
A Buckingham Palace spokesman said: “The Queen is of course concerned by the report of an attack in Woolwich earlier… Her Majesty is being kept informed.”
Ed Miliband MP, leader of the Labour Party, said: “This is a truly appalling murder which will shock the entire country.”
