Indian women officers are all set to command battalions in Indian army.
New Delhi, July 28/Nationalturk – In a good news for women officers of Indian army, India’s new elected government is all set to allow women to command battalions in the army.
According to reports in Indian media, India’s rightwing BJP government, which came to power after sweeping general election in May this year, is going to allow women officers to command battalions in the army’s branches such as aviation, engineers and signal.
Media reports quoting sources as saying that Indian government may file an affidavit in the Supreme Court where it will say that women officers joining the force from 2015-16 onwards will be trained to command battalions.
“Besides, the women officers would be allowed to compete with their male counterparts to be eligible to head the units,” reports said adding the women officers will be given some relaxation in terms of physical standards.
However, there will be no relaxation in training programme and women officers will have to go through the same regimen as male officers.
As of now, Women officers in Indian army are allowed only in non-combat arms and are not allowed to command units.
Women officers were first inducted in Indian army in early 1990s.
