A manhunt involving more than 100 police and helicopters with thermal imaging was under way today for a gunman who killed eight people in Virginia.
Police said Christopher Speight, 39, had fled to the woods, violently resisting efforts to take him in and nearly shooting down a police helicopter.
State police said officers had surrounded Speight near a home in Appomattox, where seven bodies were found.
An eighth victim was found barely alive on the side of a road and died on the way to the hospital. The discovery of the eighth victim led police to Speight.
The shootings occurred just before lunchtime yesterday. All the victims were adult men and women, Thomas Molnar from Virginia state police said. Police refused to speculate on a motive and would not say what type of weapon was used.
Speight’s last known address was in the block where the shootings occurred.
Police would not say whether all the victims had been shot at the home where most of the bodies were found. Nor would they say whether the shootings had happened at Speight’s address or another house.
