In yet another assault on weaker sex in India, a 30-year-old American woman was allegedly gang raped in key tourist resort in India.
New Delhi, June 4/Nationalturk – A 30-year-old American woman was allegedly gang raped in key tourist resort of Manali in India’s northern state of Himachal Pradesh on Tuesday.
Police sources said the American tourist, who had reached Manali yesterday, had gone to old Vashisth area to meet some friends last evening.
“She was allegedly overpowered by two persons, who gave lift to her in a tipper on her way back to Manali. They gang raped her in the moving tipper,” they said.
Manali is a popular tourist destination in India and is some 500 kilometres from New Delhi, capital of India.
The victim has lodged a complaint with police and alleged that she was raped by two persons. “The accused also took away my iPhone and some currency,” she told the police.
She has also told the police that the accused youth were in the age group of 18 to 25 years.
Medical examination of victim was conducted: Police
A senior police officer said medical examination of the victim was conducted and report is awaited. “We have registered a case of rape under section 376 of the IPC and US embassy in New Delhi has been informed”.
He said they have launched a massive manhunt to track down the rapists. “We have got some clues about the vehicle used for committing the crime”.
A US embassy spokesperson in Delhi has said they were in contact with authorities.
The attack comes a day after police in Indian State of West Bengal arrested a local businessman suspected of drugging and raping a 21-year-old Irish charity worker after her birthday party.
A Swiss tourist was gang raped in Indian State of Madhya Pradesh in March this year.
Earlier, in December last year, gang rape of 23-year-old medical student sparked widespread protests and prompted the India government to alter laws relating to rape in India. Five men and one juvenile have been charged with the rape. One of the accused has since hanged himself in prison in India’s Tihar jail.
The incident had evoked massive outrage with people come out on roads and demanding severe punishment including death penalty to the rapists.
