Uruguayan tourism at full steam during Holy Week

Some 114,000 people crossed from Uruguay to Argentina for Tourism Week, a secular version of Holy Week between April 11 and 17. According to local media, 95,000 were Uruguayan citizens, followed by 11,000 Argentines and 2,000 Brazilians.

Meanwhile, just over 80,000 foreign travelers entered Uruguay between April 8 and 13; 26,000 of them were Argentines. The number of visitors is expected to increase since in Argentina the first non-working day of the holiday was Thursday the 14th.

The border crossings through which the majority of Uruguayans left were Colonia (21,550), Paysandú (18,070) and Salto (15,006), it was reported.

The director of Tourism for Colonia del Sacramento, Martín de Freitas, said that this year’s Tourism Week “is going to be spectacular and we have 100% reservations until Sunday.”

“We are full in the whole department. Not only in Colonia de Sacramento, where the largest hotel and gastronomic base is, but also in the east and west. We also have many hotels and several very nice towns to visit with their culture and traditions”, he added.

De Freitas also admitted “that many Argentines are crossing”, although “not at the same level as before”.
For his part, the Minister of Tourism of Uruguay, Tabaré Viera, highlighted the importance of the return of the Carmelo-Tigre river route, because “connectivity is essential for Uruguay and the region.”

“We are preparing for the new season,” the official said. “This new startup is confirmed by the main companies and operators that work on the lines present in the region,” added Viera.

He also announced that Uruguay is working on its next presentation at Seatrade Cruise Global 2022, the world’s largest cruise fair, which will take place in Miami between April 25 and 28.

In addition, Viera also told the media that his Ministry is developing new Social Tourism programs according to Law No. 19253 for older adults, workers and students, in order to promote internal travel.
