UNHRC Backs Draft Condemning Israeli Raid on Flotilla
The UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) agrees to back a resolution endorsing the critical findings of an inquiry into Israel’s attack on a Gaza-bound aid flotilla.
The resolution, which had been initially approved by the Organization of the Islamic Conference, was endorsed on Wednesday.
“The results of the recorded votes are as follows — 30 in favor, 1 against and 15 abstentions. Therefore the draft resolution l33 as orally revised is adopted,” Sihasak Phuangketkeow, the president of council said. The US voted against the resolution.
Last week, a committee of independent experts appointed by the UNHRC said that Israel had only investigated low-ranking officials about the attack and its inquiries had not met standards of impartiality.
A total of nine Turkish activists lost their lives when Israeli soldiers attacked their aid flotilla in international waters on May 31.
Turkish Ambassador to UN Oguz Demiralp said that the resolution represents “consensus against those who seek impunity despite all the unlawful acts they have committed in defiance of the human council,” AP reported.
The UNHRC says there is clear evidence to back prosecution against Israel.
