Turkish Referee Cüneyt Cakir elected among 18 referee candidates to whistle at Fifa 2014 World Cup taking place in Brasil.
Istanbul / NationalTurk – Cüneyt Çakır, one of the best Turkish referees at the moment, has been selected by FIFA among the 18 referees from all over the world to whistle at the 2014 FIFA World Cup.
Cüneyt Çakır, 36, will also officiate at the Euro 2012 in Ukraine and Poland this summer

Cüneyt Çakır has been in the middle for more than 140 matches in the Turkish Super League ( Turkcell Super League and as of 2010 Super Toto Süper Lig) and was selected for the U21 finals in Sweden in 2009, taking charge of three games including England’s penalty shoot-out win against the hosts Sweden in the semi-finals.
Çakır made his UEFA debut as the fourth official in the UEFA Champions League first qualifying round game between Skonto FC and Sliema Wanderers F.C. in July 2003.
He officiated at two games at the 2007 UEFA European Under-19 Championship in Austria and was also the #1 referee for two UEFA Euro 2008 qualifying fixtures.
Cüneyt Çakır who lives with his wife in Istanbul, Turkey and works in insurance bussiness, made his international refereeing debut in the 2008–09 UEFA Cup, taking charge of two games including the group stage game between FC Twente and FC Schalke 04 in December 2008.
He refereed Fulham’s second-leg win vs Hamburger SV in the 2009–10 UEFA Europa League semi-finals, one of seven matches he refereed in total in the UEFA Europa League competition that season.
On 29 September 2010, Çakır made his debut in the Champions League Group Stage when he officiated group D fixture between Rubin Kazan vs FC Barcelona, resulting in a one all draw. He also took charge of the match between Chelsea F.C. and FC Spartak Moscow on 3 November 2010.

Cüneyt Çakır was also the referee of the UEFA Europa League Round of 32 clash between Manchester City-Dynamo Kyiv on 17.3.2011, which finished with a 1-0 win for Manchester City, but Dynamo Kyiv advanced to the next round after winning 2-1 on aggregate. Cüneyt Çakır sent off Manchester City’s troubled bad boy Mario Balotelli and dished out a total of eight yellow cards.
On August 2011, he refereed five games in 2011 FIFA U-20 World Cup, Colombia being host of the games.
