Turkey has scrambled six F-16 combat jets near its border with Syria after Syrian helicopters flew too close to the frontier.

Relations between Turkey and Syria are getting worse as Ankara scrambled 6 fighter jets after Syrian helicopters flew close to the border, underlining the distrust between the neighbours after shot down a Turkish plane. Turkey’s military has over and above 5 hundred miles of border with Syria to vindicate. It has now decided to treat everything that happens on the Syrian side of the border with extreme mistrust.

The hole malevolence came as Turkey’s Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan demanded that a jet fighter shot down by Syria last month has been in international airspace, cancelling a United States newspaper report that it was downed inside Syria as false.

The Turkish army officially said four F-16 combat aircraft took off from Incirlik airbase after Syrian helicopters flew 4 miles closer to the border than is required and 2 more F-16 warplanes scrambled from a base in Batman after 1 helicopter approached the border in the south of Mardin province. There were 3 incidents but there was no violation of Turkish airspace.

NATO has reprobated the attack and voiced strong support for Turkey, after Ankara invoked Art. 4 of Nato’s founding settlement, which entitles any member state to ask for consultations if it believes its security is threatened.

The Turkish government announced that it had revised its military rules of engagement towards Syria. At present time, every military element that approached the Turkish frontier from Syria would be considered as a threat. The military has now acted on its new rules.

Opposition activists groups are mind that more than 14 thousands people have been killed since the uprising versus Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s authoritarian rule began in summer last year, or on average around 9 hundred a month. That would make last week’s toll alone almost as high as the monthly average as government forces furiously pounded rebellious towns and cities with helicopters, tanks and artillery in an offensive aimed at recovering rebel-held territories.

Turkey scrambled F-16 combat jets days after it said it would handle any Syrian military unit forthcoming its border as a direct threat in response to the downing of a Turkish reconnaissance plane by Syrian forces. Turkey has also reinforced its border with anti-aircraft guns and other weapons.
