Trump wants Mike Waltz as security advisor

The National Security Advisor is a key job for US foreign policy - and is apparently going to someone with a tough stance on China and Ukraine.

According to reports, it also seems to be clear who will become Secretary of State.

Donald Trump wants to fill the important post of National Security Advisor with Republican MP Mike Waltz, according to media reports. Waltz is known as an advocate of a tough stance on China and has called for a rethink of US support for Ukraine in Russia’s war of aggression.

Trump has offered him the post in the White House, reported the Wall Street Journal and news channel CNN, among others. The security advisor is a key position for foreign policy that is filled without the approval of the Senate. In his first term in office, Trump had four security advisors.

Waltz for new Ukraine course

Waltz, a member of the US House of Representatives from Florida, has been a supporter of the president-elect for years. Last year, he wrote in an opinion piece on Fox News with regard to the Republican majority in the House of Representatives: “The era of blank checks for Ukraine from Congress is over.”

He argued, among other things, that European countries must make an even greater contribution. At the same time, he said that the USA had the leverage to lift the restrictions on the use of American weapons supplied to Ukraine against Russia.

Florida Senator Rubio could become Secretary of State

According to media reports, Trump has also chosen a candidate for the post of Secretary of State: Florida Senator Marco Rubio is set to take over the office. However, this appointment does not appear to be final.

The New York Times reported, citing three sources familiar with Trump, that the decision was not yet final – but that the future president seemed to have decided on Rubio’s appointment. Richard Grenell, the former US ambassador to Germany, had also been mentioned as a promising candidate in recent days.

Hard line against China and Iran

Rubio is known for his tough stance against Iran and China. In recent interviews, he also insisted on a negotiated solution with Russia for the war in Ukraine. “I am not on Russia’s side – but unfortunately the reality is that the war in Ukraine will only end with a negotiated solution,” he told NBC in September.

The political scientist is the son of Cuban immigrants and has been a member of the US Senate since 2010. In 2016, he was still vying with Trump for the Republican presidential nomination – and at the time called Trump “the most vulgar person to ever seek the presidency.”
