According to media reports, candidate Kari Lake, who was supported by former US President Donald Trump, lost the gubernatorial election in the state of Arizona to Democrat Katie Hobbs. Hobbs prevailed after a close race against her Republican rival, as reported by the American broadcasters CNN and NBC.

“Democracy is worth the wait,” Hobbs wrote on Twitter, referring to the day-long vote count after the November 8 election. “Thank you, Arizona. I am so honored and proud to be your next governor.”

Hobbs’ party colleague, former astronaut Mark Kelly, had previously won the Arizona Senate seat.

The losers doubt the result

The defeated candidate Lake, a former TV news anchor and die-hard Trump supporter, like her mentor, regularly expresses doubts about the legality of the 2020 presidential election. Lake also cast doubt on the projections of the television stations for the gubernatorial election in Arizona. The people of the state were not fooled, she wrote on Twitter.

Trump also raised allegations of fraud on his online platform Truth Social. “You just took the election away from Kari Lake. It’s really bad out there,” he wrote.

The possible presidential candidate Trump is weakened

Several Trump-backed candidates suffered defeats in the congressional and gubernatorial elections, weakening the 76-year-old’s position within his party ahead of the expected announcement of his presidential re-election.

Trump promised a “very big announcement” on Tuesday evening at his private home in Mar-a-Lago, Florida. He is then expected to announce his intention to run again in the 2024 presidential election.

The 52-year-old Democrat defeated Kari Lake for the governorship. Republican right-wing candidate Lake was supported by Trump and recently made fun of the attack on Nancy Pelosi’s husband.

According to forecasts, Democrat Katie Hobbs has won the contested gubernatorial election in the US state of Arizona. The 52-year-old prevailed against Republican right-wing candidate Kari Lake on Tuesday, according to forecasts by the TV stations NBC and CNN.

Hobbs served on the state government for the 2020 presidential ballot count contested by former President Donald Trump and his supporters. Lake, a former TV host, has been endorsed by Trump and is among those who have repeated his unsubstantiated claims that Joe Biden only won the presidential election through massive fraud. In connection with this, she had called for the then state Secretary of the Interior to be arrested for voter fraud – and that was Katie Hobbs, the Democratic contender for the governorship who is now emerging as the winner of the election campaign.

Joking about the attack on Nancy Pelosi’s husband

Lake was among the Republicans who used the attack as a campaign mockery after the violent attack on the husband of US leader Nancy Pelosi. During an Arizona campaign on protecting schools from attackers, Lake joked about the attack on Pelosi’s husband, Paul.

The previous Republican governor, Doug Ducey, was unable to run in the elections due to a term limit. Arizona is considered a contested state in the USA, which has changed more and more from a once republican stronghold in favor of the Democrats. In the election on Tuesday last week, governors were voted on in 36 states. Currently, only the election in the state of Alaska has not yet been decided due to a complicated electoral system. The governor is the most important office in a federal state, comparable to a prime minister of a federal state in Germany.
