The Jewish chants of the fans of Tottenham Hotspur have a long tradition, but the FA wants to ban it now. UK PM  David Cameron thinks nothing of it, he defends the songs – after all, they were not motivated by hate.

UK  Prime Minister David Cameron has intervened in the dispute over Jewish chants of the fans of Tottenham Hotspur. He defended the chants of supporters and spoke out against the punishment of the Premier League clubs.

“You have to look at the idea behind it: It makes a difference whether the Spurs fans call themselves ‘Yid’, or if someone else gets it as an insult,” Cameron told the “Jewish Chronicle”. To be punished, the motivation must be hatred: “Hate speech should be pursued.”

Tottenham fans refer to themselves as “Yid Army!” (Jewish army). Many Spurs fans themselves are of Jewish origin, for them it is part of their football tradition to proudly point out. Even with the outdated and actually pejorative term “Yid”.

But the FA had made the use of the term “Yid” and variations of the word in the bandage guidelines for suspected offense under ban. Also, because it is used by fans of other clubs in an offensive manner.

Tottenham Hotspur responded promptly. Everybody was aware of the sensitivity of the issue, according to a club statement, “our fans have taken over the historic song, in order to forestall anti-Semitic abuse. They want to offend anyone.” The association has therefore announced to send a survey to bow his followers to consult together whether one should refrain from singing or even prohibit future.
