In its ranking (the annual “The Global Liveability Index”), the “Economist” takes into account various factors that objectively make a city worth living in. These include the political situation there, the health system, the social security of the citizens and the quality of the infrastructure. And according to the study, these are the most common in Austria’s capital. This makes Vienna currently the most livable city in the world.

After two years, Vienna is back in first place in the ranking

Vienna had already taken first place in the annual ranking in 2018 and 2019. But then Corona came, and as almost everywhere in Europe, people had to come to terms with restrictions that came at the expense of their quality of life.

New Zealand, on the other hand, had sealed itself off to prevent larger waves of infection. As a result, the whole country was able to largely do without corona rules for its citizens. Auckland has been ranked number one among the world’s most livable cities for two years in a row. In 2022, however, the city is relatively far behind in 34th place, with New Zealand’s Wellington in 50th place in the ranking.

European and Canadian cities dominate the ranking

This year’s second place in the ranking goes to Copenhagen (Denmark), third place to Zurich (Switzerland). Canadian cities, Calgary and Vancouver, came in fourth and fifth.

Both cities dropped 13 and 15 points respectively due to increasing political instability, censorship and Western sanctions.
