Damascus / NationalTurk – Two strong explosions ripped through the Syrian capital of Damascus early Thursday, killing or wounding dozens of people and leaving scenes of carnage and bloodshed in the streets of Damascus in an assault against a center of Bashar al-Assad’s government power. One of the rush hour blast hit a district that houses a well known military intelligence complex involved in President Bashar al-Assad’s crackdown on a 14-month uprising. State media stated earlier the majority of the casualties in the Damascus blasts were civilians.
The explosions, which ripped the facade off a military intelligence building, happened at about 7:50 a.m. when employees are usually arriving at work.
CBS News’ George Baghdadi reported human remains and badly burned or charred bodies littered the streets after the twin explosions, which also destroyed as many as 40 cars and pickup trucks. Syrian state television put the death toll at 40, with another 170 wounded. The precise body count could not be immediately confirmed, but Baghdadi states there were dozens of bodies visible after the explosions.
Syrian state and opposition blame each other for Damascus explosions
The Syrian Assad government blames ‘terrorists’ and stated dozens were killed or wounded, most of them civilians. The leading opposition group, the Syrian National Council, cast blame on the Bashar al-Assad government itself, according to Al-Arabiya television. The Syrian opposition has previously accused the Assad regime of carrying out large bomb attacks targeting government workers and buildings in Syria.
