A crowd of people gathered in Damascus on Tuesday to welcome Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and show their appreciation for Russia’s support to Syria in a crucial moment of intense political and media hostility.
Thousands of residents of this capital stood on both sides of the final stretch of Avenue Mezzeh, with Syrian and Russian flags and chanting slogans for national unity, supporting President Bashar al-Assad and expressing gratitude to Russia.
Dozens of vehicles carrying Syrian and Russian flags and banners with the image of President al-Assad, and sounding their horns, cruised the avenue, one of the main ones of this city.
Lavrov is scheduled to meet al-Assad and his counterpart Walid al-Moallen; he is also expected to meet Prime Minister Adel Safar, depending on the time the Russian Foreign Minister remains in Damascus,a source told Prensa Latina.
Journalists and academics are speculating regarding the topics to be discussed by Sergei Lavrov and the Syrian authorities.
Neither side has officially released the contents of the agenda.
