South Sudan Politics: President Kiir Sacks his entire Cabinet Including Vice-President / Africa News

The South Sudanese president, Salva Kiir has sacked his entire cabinet ministers including his vice-President in what political analysts describe as an apparent power struggle with other senior leaders in the country.

The sacked cabinet includes deputy ministers and the number is believed to be around over 50 members sacked by the president.

Local reporters say President Kiir issued a personal decree dismissing all ministers and deputy ministers, as well as Vice-President Riek Machar on Tuesday evening.

It is also believed that the top envoy negotiator who is in talks with Sudan for peace to prevail between the two countries has also been suspended or probably sacked from office like the ministers and the vice-president.

The decree read on state television quoted President Kiir as saying that: “he had suspended the cabinet and also Pagan Amum, the country’s top negotiator with Sudan for peace and also the Secretary General of the ruling Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM)’’.

South Sudan has suffered continuous economic problems since it split from Sudan in 2011 to be a Republic as newly created nation.

The president has come under criticisms from the ruling Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) members as a result of disputes with Sudan that have prevented South Sudan from exporting its crude oil and other related problems including Mr. Kiir leadership style.

But many analysts also believe that Mr. Kiir is battling to maintain control as the leader of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) without any challenge in 2015 general elections.

Secretaries in the various ministries have been put in charge of the departments and the government insists it can function smoothly until new ministers are appointed.

Western diplomats in South Sudan have said they fear South Sudan could slip back into instability as a result of these multiple challenges including the confrontation over oil flows with Sudan and among many internal problems.

Local reporters also added however that, President Kiir has not violated any law and that sacking, reshuffling and appointment of ministers is within his constitutional mandate.

South Sudan is rich in oil but is one of Africa’s least developed countries with bad infrastructure and low level of income and social amenities for its people.

South Sudan gained independence from Sudan in July 2011 after a decades-long civil war of which the international community including the United States supported and welcomed.

Bir Yorum

  1. kiir must consider, what he has done because people are victim sack the entire cabinet with vice p is not good for country.
country needs those leaders to lead the country for now. if kiir his plan to sack lead he should not do it in public way people are suffering from this mistake the his doing without thinking about it twice or three. you are the leader, if you are fire leader like that what do think people will react to decision you make for them, they will think you are the waste leader on history because if are the president the entire cabinet do think will supports you.
