According to reports from Oak Creek Patch, seven people were killed and at least three wounded in Wisconsin Sikh temple shooting. Police reportedly shot and killed the gunman, but have no motive yet for the attack. A police officer was also shot several times, but is expected to live.

Members of the Hudson Valley Sikh Society in Middletown plan to talk at next week’s service about the shooting that left at least seven dead people at a Sikh temple near Milwaukee after a gunman had opened fire at a Sikh temple.

Some Sikh community members could not believe what happened. Others said they had feared such attacks since World Trace Center tragedy 9/11. Turban-wearing Sikhs are often mistaken for Muslims, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation is overseeing the probe into shootings.

A local Sikh woman who helps to run the Sikh Gurudwara St. Louis, which rents the Masonic Temple on Olive in Creve Coeur for its services, Kanwal Seehra has told : ‘ We were in a church when this happened. We got text messages from all our friends ‘.

She has also said that several members of the sangat, or congregation, knew families who are part of the Sikh community in Oak Creek. They had been in touch with those friends and they were fine.

A gunman entered the Sikh temple on Sunday morning and opened fire, killing six people and injuring a policeman. A vigil for the victims was held in nearby Milwaukee as police searched the suspect’s home.

FBI and bomb squad officers have surrounded the property of the alleged gunman in Cudahy, about 4 km north of the Wisconsin Sikh Temple and evacuated local residents.

In total seven people has died in the attack in Oak Creek, Wisconsin, a suburb of Milwaukee, including the gunman. A police officer and two other men were critically injured and hospitalized.

The priest at the Middletown temple, said they did not feel threatened because of the shootings in Sikh temple, but still were awaiting more details.

The Oak Creek shooting was the latest in a series of suburban US gun rampages. Organizations fighting gun violence rate Wisconsin’s gun safety laws from low to moderate. According to the Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence, there are no limits on the number of firearms that can be purchased at one time, nor on the possession or transfer of assault weapons.

Wisconsin Sikh temple attack came just over 2 weeks after a mask gunman has opened fire at a theater in Denver, Colorado, killing 12 people and wounding 58. In January 2011, then-congresswomen Gabrielle Giffords was the target of an assassination attempt in which 6 people were killed and 13 were wounded in Tucson, Arizona.

Members of the Milwaukee Sikh community complained to police and a state representative last year about an upturn in robberies and vandalism at Sikh-owned gas stations and stores.

US President Barack Obama said he was deeply saddened and pledged his administration’s commitment to fully investigate the shooting. Barack Obama was briefed by counterterrorism adviser John Brennan and FBI director Bob Mueller and told the situation at the Sikh temple in Wisconsin was under control.

The Indian embassy in Washington said it was in touch with the National Security Council about the shooting and an Indian diplomat had been sent to the Sikh temple in Wisconsin.

Both the Milwaukee-area temple where the shootings took place and the Middletown temple, known as gurdwaras, are part of the American region of the World Sikh Council.
