The first World’s Fair housed in Crystal Palace covered an area of about 20 soccer pitches.
Its successor show that opens in Shanghai tomorrow is the size of two Monacos. The China Pavilion alone is the equivalent of 35 football fields. At Shanghai Expo 2010, size matters.
The 1851 Fair showcased Britain’s industrial and innovative prowess, not to mention its status as the superpower of the age. China has not tried to disguise that the first Expo to be held in a developing country offers similar opportunities to show off.
President Hu Jintao said on Thursday: “Shanghai’s hosting of the World Expo is the pride of all Chinese people.”
The numbers are jawdropping. China has spent more than $US58 billion compared with $42 billion for the Beijing Olympics in 2008. Shanghai’s subway system has doubled in size in just a year.
A third airport terminal opened just weeks before the May 1 opening. A remodelling of the famed riverfront Bund where Shanghainese stroll in the evening with the pooches and tourists gaze at the 19th century art deco mansions on one bank and 21st century futuristic skyscrapers on the other cost $US700 million.

Dear Sir/Mam;I have been robbed in Shanghai by Chinese People and need your full spuport, pleasePlease assist us in our catastrophe as we have been robbed by a broker of used construction equipments who is located in Shanghai, China. The story begins when we searched the internet for a good company to deal with and transferred a deposit of US$10,000 to this company for an agreed wheel loader based on the photos and details received from them, but when I visited Shanghai last April 2010 I found out that the agreed loader does not exist and this company has robbed our money, we have contacted some lawyers in Shanghai though the internet trying to find the best way of getting our money back but because the lawyers ‘fees for Non-Chinese is very expensive as US$500/hour we have been advised by some Chinese friends to try to get another good loader from that company, we have agreed ,not to loose our money, on another loader and have asked a Chinese gentleman who we knew in Shanghai to work with that company on all the agreed details till loading that other agreed loader into the container and send it to my country, and here comes the nightmare when we discovered that the received loader is nothing but a piece of junk/scarab that worth Nothing as it is not the same agreed loader that we paid for. Please assist us (as we can not fund the very expensive fees of the lawyers) with what ever you can to get all my rights (almost US$45,000) from those people (if they are guilty) who are ruining the image of the Chinese honest people.N.B. we can furnish all the spuported documents (contract, emails & photos).
