An Istanbul criminal court released 7 of 23 suspects in Turkey’s continuing match-fixing trial.

ISTANBUL / NationalTurk – Turkey match fixing case continues with trials in Istanbul. Fenerbahçe Vice Chairman, Şekip Mosturoğlu; Fenerbahçe team coordinator Cemil Turan; former Eskişehirspor manager Bülent Uygun; Sivasspor Chairman Mecnun Odyakmaz; Giresunspor Vice Chairman, Coşkun Çalık; Giresunspor Chairman Ömer Ülkü; and Giresunspor physical therapist Mehmet Yenice were all released.

Sixteen suspects, however, have still not been released, including Fenerbahçe president Aziz Yildirim and ex-chairman of Giresunspor Olgun Peker, both named the primal masterminds of organizing the crime spree of match rigging and manipulating. Aziz Yıldırım ‘s continued imprisonment resulted in a fan protest in front of the courthouse, leading to police allegedly intervening with pepper spray, batons, and water cannon and disrupting the rampant Fenerbahce fans.

Turkey Match Fixing Trials continue amid TFF Presidential elections

The Turkish match fixing trial started when prosecutors alleged that there were deep-rooted ties between Turkish football teams and the mafia, as well as attempts to manipulate last season’s football championship won by Fenerbahce in a tight contest with Trabzonspor.

Fenerbahce boss Aziz Yıldırım accused city rivals Galatasaray as ‘ the club who invented match-fixing ‘ and created more havoc in Turkish football.
