More than 300 people died in the sinking of the South Korean ferry “Sinking of the MV Sewol”. Now a court has sentenced the captain of the vessel breach of duty to 36 years in prison. A crew member must long to prison for murder also.
Guilty of negligence, but not murder: Lee Joon Seok, captain of the sunken South Korean ferry “Sinking of the MV Sewol”, has for 36 years in prison. In support of the judges said, the captain had breached his obligations, which led to death of people.
With the ruling, the court remains under the demand of the prosecutor, order the captain to death for premeditated murder. The chief engineer of the ship, the court found guilty of murder and sentenced him to 30 years in prison. He did not help two injured crew members. Two other co-defendant crew members were given prison sentences of 15 and 20 years.
The ferry was sunk in mid-April with 476 people on board. More than 300 people were killed, including some 250 students. Nine people were still missing until recently. The captain was among the first who had left the ship.
In the process he had admitted errors and apologized for having left the passengers in the lurch. But he also said he did not know that his actions to the death of so many people would lead. The accusation that he had taken the death of the passengers of the deal, he refused.
Shortly before the verdict was announced, the South Korean Ministry had announced for Ocean Affairs, set the search for the last missing. The underwater operations were terminated and he deeply regret that the still missing nine victims of the ferry disaster could not be found, said European seas and Fisheries Minister Lee Ju Young.
