Deposed Myanmar leader San Suu Kyi from house arrest to solitary

Myanmar's deposed government leader Aung San Suu Kyi has been transferred to a prison in the capital Naypyidaw after more than a year of house arrest.

There she was placed in an isolation cell, a spokesman for the military government told AFP news agency.

The 77-year-old Nobel laureate was detained by the military in February 2020, along with then-President Win Myint, after the army staged a coup d’état. Since then, multiple charges have been filed against her and she has been convicted several times.

Suu Kyi, for example, has been sentenced to five years in prison for corruption and has previously been sentenced to six years in prison for incitement against the army, violating corona rules and the telecommunications law (she is alleged to have illegally imported walkie-talkies).

More cases are pending against Suu Kyi. Until now, she was allowed to prepare for this under house arrest. If convicted on all counts, the politician could face a total of more than 150 years in prison.

A source around Suu Kyi told AFP that she remains “in good spirits” and “cheerful” and that she faces the new situation with calmness. Suu Kyi is also in good health as far as the source knows.
