Ruth Moschner comments on Greta Thunberg

Last Friday, Greta Thunberg called for a strike for solidarity with the Palestinians instead of a strike for the climate. On the online networks X (formerly Twitter) and Instagram, Thunberg wrote:

“Today we are striking in solidarity with Palestine and Gaza. The world must raise its voice and demand an immediate ceasefire, justice and freedom for the Palestinians and all affected civilians.”

Pro-Palestinian organizations had called for a “general strike,” and Thunberg shared the leaflet in an Instagram story.

A few hours after Thunberg posted the post, she deleted it and re-uploaded it, this time with a new photo. There had previously been criticism of a cuddly toy seen in the picture, which was said to be reminiscent of an anti-Semitic symbol. Thunberg wrote in her new post that she was unaware of the similarity. “We are of course against any kind of discrimination and condemn anti-Semitism in any form,” she wrote on X.

The Swedish environmental activist’s post received a lot of attention in the online media and caused outrage in parts of German politics. Critics particularly complained that Thunberg did not specifically mention the 1,400 deaths in the major attack by the Islamist Hamas on Israel two weeks ago.

TV star Ruth Moschner also comments on Thunberg’s stance on the Middle East war. She explains in a story on Instagram: “I thought for a long time whether I should say something about Greta Thunberg because it moved me extremely. I got pretty angry, which of course is not the right emotion to say something about it out loud .”

“Greta made a big mistake here”

The 47-year-old also refers to an interview by “RiffReporter”, the cooperative for free journalism. Tamar Zandberg, a prominent representative of the Israeli climate and human rights movement, has her say. Zandberg was also Israeli Environment Minister and leader of the left-wing Meeretz party.

Zandberg was “shocked” and “deeply disappointed” by Thunberg’s post, she says. “To understand the horror of this, you have to know that Greta Thunberg was a hero of the environmental movement in Israel. As everywhere, we admired her ability to give a voice to the fight against the climate crisis.” She considers Thunberg’s view to be “blindness to fundamental values of humanity.”

The politician judges: “Greta has made a big mistake here.” This could have consequences for the famous climate activist: “If Greta doesn’t understand what she did and doesn’t correct it, the movement will become alienated and turned away from her.”
