New Delhi, April 17/Nationalturk – India has appointed Admiral Robin K Dhowan, a navigation and direction specialist, as chief of its Navy.
Dhowan had taken over as the acting Naval Chief on February 26 after the then Navy chief D K Joshi resigned following series of accidents involving sub marines.
In February this year, two Indian Navy officers were killed in a fire that broke out aboard submarine INS Sindhuratna off the coast of Mumbai. In August last year, another submarine, INS Sindhurakshak sank in the Mumbai harbour after an explosion, killing 18 sailors.
“Admiral RK Dhowan was commissioned in Indian Navy on January 1, 1975. He is a Navigation and Direction specialist who has served with distinction in an array of Command, Staff and Instructional appointments through his exemplary career spanning 40 years,” an Indian defence spokesman said.
He said new Navy chief is an alumnus of the National Defence Academy, Defence Services Staff College and Naval War College, Newport, Rhode Island, USA.
“He has commanded frontline warships INS Khukri, INS Ranjit, INS Delhi and served as Chief Staff Officer (Operations) Headquarters Western Naval Command. He has also served as Indian Naval Adviser at the High Commission of India, London,” the spokesman said.
The new Navy Chief Admiral Dhowan will be confronted with the challenge of navigating the Indian Navy through very trying times.
