Puhdys drummer Klaus Scharfschwerdt is dead
For years he played the drums for the Puhdys. Now Klaus Scharfschwerdt has died unexpectedly. The musician was 68 years old.
Very few people knew: Klaus Scharfschwerdt had been battling stubborn lung cancer for years. That fight came to an end on Friday. The musician died in a hospital in Berlin. This is announced by his family in a post on Facebook.
The message says: “We are in deep pain, we are without words. And yet we unfortunately have to announce: Our Klaus Scharfschwert finally lost his long fight against cancer last Friday.” Scharfschwerdt was “always strong and full of hope” that he could survive the illness. “Unfortunately, it shouldn’t be like that,” the family now describes the bitter reality.
Now the family is asking for privacy and “silence” at this time of grief. The funeral service should only take place in the immediate family circle.
Puhdy bassist Harry Jeske died in August 2020
Klaus Scharfschwerdt had been the Puhdys’ drummer since 1979, succeeding Gunther Wosylus. The Ostrocker originally learned the trade of carpenter. In 1975 he became a professional musician, playing with Vulcan, Prinzip and Stern Meißen, among others. After his time with the most famous rock band in the GDR, he founded the band Scharfschwerts Neuland a few years ago.
The Puhdys announced their dissolution in February 2014. At the beginning of 2016 they finally gave their last concert in Berlin. Scharfschwerdt is now the second Puhdy musician to have died. As the first member of the band, bassist Harry Jeske died in August 2020. He was 82 years old. Scharfschwertdt dies even younger – leaving behind his wife Gabi and his son Nick.
