The President, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, GCFR will tonight host members of the national football teams that have done Nigeria proud in international competitions in the past 17 months.
These are the U-17 boys (Golden Eaglets) who reached the final of the FIFA U-17 World Cup hosted by Nigeria in October/November, 2009, the national U-20 women’s team (Falconets) that also reached the final of the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup staged in Germany July/August, 2010 and the national women’s team (Super Falcons) that reclaimed the African Women’s Championship title in South Africa in November, 2010.
The event, which begins at 7pm, will take place at the Banquet Hall of the State House, Abuja.
The Golden Eaglets swept everyone off their feet with scintilating football in reaching the U-17 World Cup final before losing to Switzerland, while the Falconets also impressed greatly at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup before losing the final match to Germany.
Winners of the first five African Women Championship titles before losing their crown to hosts Equatorial Guinea in 2008, the Super Falcons left no one in doubt as to their mission in South Africa, and spanked Cup holders Equatorial Guinea in the final match to reclaim their title.
