Pop star Madonna wraps up Malawi visit

U.S. pop star Madonna has ended her week-long visit to Malawi where she met with the country’s president and launched a number of charity works.

The pop diva left Malawi quietly on Monday after meeting with the biological father of one of her adopted children Yohane Banda— father of 9-year-old David Banda.

Yet, she did not meet the parents of her other adopted Malawi-born child, Mercy Chifundo James.

Sarah Ezzy, director of the U.S. pop star’s charity Raising Malawi, confirmed to local media on Tuesday that Madonna left the country on her private jet via the Kamuzu International Airport in the capital, Lilongwe.

She arrived in Malawi last Wednesday in her latest visit after she fell out of favor with former president Joyce Banda.

Madonna is funding a number of orphanages and schools in the country.

During this visit, Madonna met with President Peter Mutharika who hailed the singer’s efforts to boost education in the country.

Mutharika also named the pop icon Malawi’s Goodwill Ambassador for Child Welfare.

For her part, Madonna has promised through her Raising Malawi charity organization to give Malawi children a gift of education.

She announced on Sunday that she will fund 10 schools in partnership with international NGO BuildOn.

According to Raising Malawi, those 10 schools are educating more than 5600 students, half of them girls.

She told school children in Kasungu on Sunday: “Education is the future. The biggest gift I can give you is education.”

The US start also announced the establishment of a new 50-bed pediatric surgery and intensive care unit.

On her latest visit to Malawi, Madonna was accompanied by her adopted Malawian children – Mercy James and David Banda along with son Rocco Ritchie.

Madonna has been visiting Malawi regularly since 2006.
