A week of mourning came to a climax today in Poland after the late Polish president, Lech Kaczynski, who tragically died in a plane crash on Saturday was buried at the Krakow’s Wawel cathedral.
Polish officials said that almost 60,000 people had gathered in central Krakow for the transportation of the two coffins of Lech Kaczynski and his wife Maria to the cathedral where Poland’s past kings, heroes and poets lie.
Polish mourners had queued all night through Saturday in Warsaw to view the coffins before they made their last journey.
United States president Barrack Obama and Germany’s chancellor Angela Merkel both had to cancel their flights due to the ash caused by the Volcanic ash which has grounded tens of thousands of planes during the weekend.
However, Russia’s president Dmitry Medvedev managed to fly to the city after the plane which crashed in Russia had caused many conspiracy theories as Kaczynski and Poles were known for their distrust of Russia.
Kaczynski family including his twin brother Jaroslaw, were insistent that the funeral went as plan on Sunday as there were talks of cancellation of the funeral due to the volcanic ash.
Many Polish senior members travelled by train and other non-air methods to reach the funeral which got such a vast audience.
