Polish PM Beata Szydło resigns

Polish Prime Minister Beata Szydlo resigned on Thursday after two years in the office.

The Polish Government Spokesperson Beata Mazurek, said in a statement that Szydlo submitted her resignation letter to the Board of Directors of her Law and Justice Party (PiS) and they accepted it at a board meeting.

The PiS party leadership will propose deputy Prime Minister and the Minister of Development and Finance Mateusz Morawiecki as a candidate to become the next prime minister, Mazurek said.

Mateusz Morawiecki, formerly an economic adviser in the cabinet of Donald Tusk, will become prime minister.

“Thank you for all your support and messages of thanks,” Szydlo said in a statement on Twitter. “These two years have been an unbelievable time for me. To serve Poland and Poles has been an honor. Thank you.”
