Police in Indian capital have put sex offenders details including their names and pictures online.

New Delhi, July 6/Nationalturk – In a move aimed to prevent sexual assaults on women, police in Indian capital (New Delhi) have put sex offenders details including their names and pictures on its website.

“Under the ‘name and shame’ move, Delhi Police has released a list of sexual offenders from 1983 to 2013 on its website. The list, carrying 664 names, includes case details and even pictures of some of the sexual offenders,” a Delhi Police officer said.

The offender whose names and photos have been put online had been found involved in rape, molestation, eve-teasing and other crimes against women.

Govt had decided to prepare data base of convicts last year

After a brutal gang rape and murder of 23-year old female student by six persons in a moving bus in Indian capital in December last year, the government had decided to prepare a data base of all rape convicts and put their photographs, names and addresses online.

Media reports quoting sources said 1983 was chosen as a starting point as there was very little information on sexual offences in the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) before that year.

“It is in pursuance of a government directive to deter sexual offenders from committing similar offences post-conviction,” a top police officer said.

He said by uploading the names and photos of the sex offenders, their objective is also to provide adequate information to those residing in and around the vicinity of these persons to keep themselves safe and prevent recurrence of such attacks.

Delhi has witnessed rise in crime against women

According to media reports, Indian capital (Delhi) has witnessed rise in crime against women this year with rape cases registering 158 per cent rise while molestation and harassment incidents went up by 600 and over 700 per cent respectively.

“Delhi reported 463 rape cases in 2013 till April 15 as against 179 during the same period corresponding year,” a police official said.

The Indian capital has earned notorious distinction of being the ‘rape capital’ of India.
