An Afghan passenger plane carrying at least 43 people was believed to have crashed in a snowstorm in the rugged Hindu Kush mountains Monday, and Western military forces were aiding in efforts to locate the wreckage and rescue any survivors.
Search teams, assisted by US and Nato forces, are on their way to the crash site, officials say.
It is understood the passengers’ next of kin have been informed.
The Pamir Airways plane is thought to have gone down near the Salang Pass, a mountainous area about 60 miles (100 km) north of the capital, Kabul.
A Nato statement said that Aircraft had been sent to help find the plane but poor weather conditions were hampering the search.
The Salang Pass is a major route through the Hindu Kush mountains connecting the capital, Kabul, to the north of the country.
