The bathroom in which Reeva Steenkamp was shot dead by Oscar Pistorius has been reconstructed in court.

The crime scene has been rebuilt in the courtroom – including the bathroom door through which shots were fired.

Alex Crawford, who is in court, said: “The courtroom is packed with people, with the reconstruction of the crime scene sitting in the corner next to the witness stand.

“There are four holes in the door, sprayed out. One is very high, one is some distance above the handle, one is below the handle and the fourth is below centre.”

Colonel Johannes Vermeulen, a forensic investigator who examined the scene, is now giving evidence

He brought out the cricket bat Pistorius used to break down the bathroom door after the shooting. He said marks on the toilet door were consistent with being hit with a cricket bat.

Prosecutor Gerrie Nel spent an extended period of time “trying to establish whether Pistorius used the bat while on his stumps”, said Crawford.

She said that if he was, this is “at odds” with Pistorius’ version of events. He has previously said he put on the prosthetic legs after the shooting.

Defence lawyer Barry Roux then tried to show Pistorius would not have had enough balance on his stumps to wield a bat.

He also said there are “missing pieces on the door”, asking “Where are those?”

Col Vermeulen said: “They probably got left at the scene.”

Day eight started with a friend of Pistorius – who said the athlete had “a big love for weapons” – continuing his evidence.

Darren Fresco earlier told North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria that Pistorius, who denies murdering his girlfriend, laughed after firing a gun through the sunroof of a car.

Pistorius claims he shot his girfriend after mistaking her for an intruder and denies all four of the charges against him – the premeditated murder of Ms Steenkamp, the illegal possession of ammunition and two further counts related to shooting a gun in public on two separate occasions before the killing.
