Troops in Pakistan have foiled jail break attempt by detecting a 40-metre-long tunnel central a prison in port city of Karachi.

Islamabad, Oct 13/Nationalturk – Pakistan troops foiled a jail break attempt by detecting a 40-metre-long tunnel under a nearby house in port city of Karachi.

“Pakistan border guards (Rangers) men managed to detect and discover an underground tunnel being built inside a house in Ghosia Colony — an impoverished locality near the Central Jail, Karachi,” Pakistan Rangers official, Colonel Tahir Mehmood told reporters today.

He said the security men were able to detect the tunnel after receiving information from intelligence agencies.

“The house was bought by the suspects about five to six months ago and we have information about the identity of the seller,” he said adding the suspects most likely got help from inside the prison.

‘Some persons detained’

Colonel Tahir said some persons have been arrested and soon the whole group involved in constructing the tunnel would be arrested.

Sources said seven people involved in the plot to breach the prison have been arrested.

He said 45 metres of tunnel had already been dug, whereas at least 55 metres were required to enter the Central Jail premises.

“The men, who were detained and interrogated, revealed that a tunnel was being dug to enter directly into the jail,” the official said.

Colonel Tahir said the tunnel  was aimed at leading directly into the jail barracks where high-value targets are being held.

“The latest equipment was used to dig the tunnel,” he added.
