Pakistan has said it would grant status of Non-Discriminatory Market Access (NDMA) to arch rivals India.
Islamabad, May 30/Nationalturk – In a significant development which will help two rival countries to have better trade ties, Pakistan has said it would grant status of Non-Discriminatory Market Access (NDMA) to arch rivals India.
“It is not Most Favoured Nation (MFN) but we call it NDMA which calls for non-discriminatory and parallel market access,” Pakistan Commerce Minister Khurram Dastgir Khan told reporters.
Bilateral trade between India and Pakistan touched $ 2.6 billion in 2012-13, an increase of 34.4 per cent over last year’s $1.94 billion.
India has already granted MFN status to Pakistan. However, Pakistan has not yet granted MFN status to India due to opposition from political parties and army.
‘Indian market offers huge opportunities to Pakistani traders’
Khan said Indian market offers huge opportunities to Pakistani traders and can help Pakistan boost its exports.
“There was no need to be fearful of Indian market’s size as Pakistan has huge export potential. We shouldn’t be apprehensive of India’s products and markets. Positive list has been replaced with negative list in previous PPP regime and barring a few things all kind of trade with India is open since 2012,” he said.
The minister termed recent visit of country’s Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to India as positive.
