Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari has claimed that he had saved opposition leader and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) chief Nawaz Sharif from being hanged.
Islamabad, Feb 14/Nationalturk –In a major revelation, Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari has claimed that he had saved opposition leader and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) chief Nawaz Sharif from being hanged by country’s former army chief and president General (Retd) Parvez Musharraf.
“General Musharraf imprisoned country’s then Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif after overthrowing his government in 1999 military coup. After imprisoning him, Musharraf had been pressuring Justice Rehmat Hussain Jafri to severely punish Nawaz and award death sentence to him,” Zardari was quoted as saying by Pakistan’s newspaper Express Tribune.
Zardari, who is now Pakistan’s president, said he had some acquaintance with Justice Jafri and used his good offices with him to save Nawaz Sharif’s life. “When I heard Musharraf was pressuring him into punishing Nawaz, I advised him to settle the case only on merit,” he said.
I convinced Justice Jafri not to award capital punishment to Nawaz
He said he was successful in convincing Justice Jafri against awarding capital punishment for Nawaz Sharif, who is now opposition leader in Pakistan.
However, there has been no response from Nawaz Sharif about Zardari’s claim.
After overthrowing Nawaz Sharif’s government in 1999, Musharraf had imprisoned him and released him only after the intervention of king of Saudi Arabia, Pakistan’s close ally. Later, Nawaz was sent into exile and allowed to return at the fag end of Musharraf’s era in 2007 under a secret deal.
