Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif  has blamed military for militancy and present turmoil in the country.

Islamabad May 6/Nationalturk – Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, who is presently in United Kingdom, has blamed military for militancy and turmoil in the country.

“The volatile security situation in the country  started after September 9, 2001 terrorist attacks in the United States. Had there been no martial law in the country at that time, there would have been no law and order situation in Pakistan at present,” Nawaz told BBC Urdu in an interview.

He said Pakistan had been peaceful during democratic governments.

His government in 1998 was over thrown by then Pakistan army chief General Parvez Musharraf in a bloodless coup. Musharraf led country for nearly a decade and now is facing scores of legal cases including a high treason case.

“In the past military dictators sidelined genuine politicians and promoted such quasi-politicians, who were least concerned about democracy which resulted in what we are suffering today”.

‘Military rulers responsibility for sectarianism’

Referring to growing sectarian violence in the country, Pakistan PM blamed military rulers for it. “Dictatorship gives birth to racism, sectarianism and social and economic inequalities. Forty years ago, there was no talk of who was Shia and who was Sunni but when the undemocratic forces came, sectarian elements became their helpers and dictatorship became the breeding ground for terrorism,” he said.

About extremism, he said it was rooted in military dictatorship, deviation from the path of law and justice, and social and economic inequalities. “Had Pakistan been on the path of democracy, there would not have been a trace of these things today,” he said.

According to media reports, Pakistan’s civilian government and army are not enjoying cordial relations. After anti-army statements by two senior ministers of Nawaz government, Pakistan army chief had come out with a strong worded statement.
