Over 700 rapes took place in 2012 in Indian capital Delhi, which is being termed as ‘rape capital’ of the country.

New Delhi, Jan 19/Nationalturk- In what may be not a good news for women in India , over 700 rapes have taken place in 2012 in Indian capital (Delhi), which is being termed as ‘rape capital’ of the country.

According to Delhi police, about 706 cases of rape were reported from Delhi (Indian capital in 2012).  “572 rape cases were reported in 2011, 507 in 2010, 469 in 2009 and 466 in 2008,” police said.

The statistics reveal that 2012 witnessed highest number of rape capes in Indian capital.

According to statistics of Delhi Police about 96 per cent rape-accused are known to victims while only 3.68 per cent of them are complete strangers.

The statistics further reveal that molestation cases against women in Delhi rose to 727 in 2012 from 657 in 2011.

According to social work activists the police figures show why Delhi has earned notoriety of being “rape capital” of India.

“Scores of rape cases go unreported”

They said scores of rape cases go unreported because the victim or her family does not report the cases to police. They said on some occasions when influential people are involved, police does not report cases of rape victims.

The Indian capital was in news recently after a 23-year-old girl was gang raped by six persons in a moving bus on December 16. She was later beaten with iron rods and thrown on a road in a semi-naked condition. However, she succumbed to injuries in Singapore hospital, where she was airlifted for specialized treatment.

The gang rape of 23-year old caused outrage in India and people across the country staged demonstrations. People from all walks of life participated in these protest demonstrations and majority of people including some politicians demanded capital punishment to the rapists.
