More than 45 people were killed and over 150 injured in a powerful explosion in Pakistan’s restive Quetta city on Saturday.

Islamabad, Feb 16/Nationalturk – Over 45 people were killed and more than 150 injured in a powerful explosion in Pakistan’s restive Quetta city on Saturday.

Police officials said the blast took place at Kirani Road, a Shia neighbourhood of Quetta this afternoon. “The blast took place on Kirana road market and it was apparently caused through a remote controlled device. The bomb was planted in a vehicle that was parked near a school and market on Kirani road,” they said.

They said about 47 persons have died in the powerful blast and more than 150 were injured. “Among the dead included women and children”.

They said the injured were rushed to nearby hospitals, where doctors have termed condition of some of the injured as “critical”. “The death toll may go up as many have been critically injured”.

Windows, glasspanes of several houses, shops damaged

The deafening sound of the blast was felt in the adjoining areas as well. The windows and glasspanes of several residential buildings and shops were damaged due to the impact of the blast.

Immediately after the blast, police and paramilitary men laid siege around the area and Bomb Disposal Squad experts searched for explosives, fearing another blast. “After thorough search operation, the bomb site was cleared”.

Officials said most of the dead were members of Hazara shia minority.

Although no militant group has owned responsibility of the attack but authorities apprehend that it may have been carried out by banned outfit Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). In past, the militant group had owned several such blasts.
