In a new appeal, the wife of the Ukrainian president is seeking help from the international churches. She calls for support in setting up safe refugee routes.
The wife of Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy has asked the World Council of Churches (WCC) for support in establishing humanitarian corridors in Ukraine. “Knowing the experience of the World Council of Churches in dealing with humanitarian crises, we ask you to help Ukraine and Ukrainians who are currently fleeing the war,” Olena Zelenska wrote in a letter, according to the Ukrainian presidency the WCC.
“I particularly ask you to mediate in the organization of real humanitarian corridors,” she added. The WCC brings together around 350 Orthodox, Lutheran, Anglican, Baptist and other churches with more than 500 million believers worldwide.
Emotional open letter from Selenska
Olena Selenska has repeatedly spoken out in recent weeks. At the beginning of March, she wrote an emotional letter to the world public and described the Russian attacks on her country as mass murder. The mother of two children referred in particular to the fate of the little ones who were killed, injured or orphaned in the war.
Zelenska has been married to the Ukrainian President since 2003 and they have a 17-year-old daughter and a nine-year-old son. While Volodymyr Zelenskyj previously worked as a comedian and actor, Olena Zelenska wrote screenplays. It is unclear if she is still in Kyiv or has been taken to a safe place in the countryside.
