Obama Arrives in Brazil, Opposition to his Visit Grows

Amid demonstrations against his presence and opposition to the imperialist policy he represents, U.S. President Barack Obama arrived in Brazil on Saturday for an official two-day visit.

At 7:40 a.m. local time, Obama stepped out of the airplane that brought him to the capital, converted into a fortress in the last few days with more than 3,000 Brazilian civilian and military troops deployed for his security, along with an unknown number of his presidential security agents.

A few hours before Obama ‘s arrival, anti-riot police suppressed a demonstration against the U.S. president in Rio de Janeiro, where protesters held up an enormous banner reading “Obama, go home!” and marched to the U.S. embassy.

Along with the violent repression, police arrested about 15 protesters, mostly young people.

The rally was one of the actions organized by social movements and labor unions to protest Obama’s visit, including a massive demonstration on Sunday, when the U.S. president will be in Rio.

Organizations comprising the coalition organizing the protests include the Marxist-Leninist Communist Party of Brazil, the Central Organization of Brazilian Workers and the Workers Party.
