Nikki Haley challenges Donald Trump
US Republican Haley wants to become her party's presidential candidate. She challenges Donald Trump - her former boss. During his reign, she was US Ambassador to the UN.
US politician Nikki Haley wants to become the Republican presidential candidate. It’s time for a new generation of leaders, she announced in a video about her candidacy.
She is considered the first major challenger to Donald Trump, who has already announced his candidacy.
Haley, the daughter of Indian immigrants, was born in South Carolina, where she served as governor from 2011 to 2017. She was then US Ambassador to the United Nations under ex-President Trump until the end of 2018 – so she is competing against her former boss.
She wants to “rediscover fiscal responsibility, secure our border and strengthen our country, our pride and our purpose,” Haley said in her announcement video. China and Russia are on the rise and believe the US can be bullied and pushed around. Haley made it clear that she didn’t want to put up with anything. “And when you step back, it hurts them more if you wear heels.”
Haley: Generation change necessary
With her decision, Haley changes her previous attitude. Two years ago she declared that she did not want to compete against Trump. As a reason for her about-face, she cited the country’s economic situation and that a “generational change” was necessary: Haley would be 52 years old for the presidential election in autumn 2024, while Trump would be 78.
To become the Republican presidential nominee, Haley must win the party’s primary. She plans to give her first major campaign speech in Charleston, South Carolina on Wednesday.
