At least 94 people died in northern Nigeria when a crashed tanker exploded near locals. The residents had gathered to collect fuel, police told the American television station CNN.

The explosion occurred late Tuesday evening (local time) in the village of Majiya in Jigawa state. Local authorities expect the number of victims to rise.

“The driver lost control, the tanker truck overturned and the fuel ran into a sewage ditch,” said a spokesman for the Jigawa police. The residents were on their way to the tanker to collect fuel when it exploded. According to the spokesman, at least 50 people were also seriously injured.

Serious traffic accidents are common in West African Nigeria, the continent’s most populous state with more than 220 million inhabitants. According to experts, the main causes are reckless driving, poor road conditions and the poor condition of many vehicles. Without an efficient rail network, most freight transport in the country takes place by road.
