The Islamist terror group Boko Haram has been to known to have abducted some 300 students in Nigeria. Their leader wants the girls to sell or forced for married as slaves.
The Islamist group Boko Haram has claimed responsibility for the kidnapping of 276 students in Nigeria and announced their ” sale “, ” enslavement ” and forced marriage . “I’ve kidnapped your girl ,” said Boko Haram terror leader Abubakar Shekau in a video . “I’ll sell them on the market , God willing . ”
The leader of the fearful Boko Haram group, Abubakar Shekau has said in a video message that Boko Haram would sell the over 300 schoolgirls it abducted from the town of Chibok in Borno State on April 16.
Heavily armed Boko Haram militants abducted the schoolgirls who were preparing for their final year exam. Only 43 of the girls are said to have been able to escape since the abduction took place.
In the video which was widely circulated in Nigeria on Monday, Abubakar Shekau brushed off warnings that the abductions could be an international crime, saying that God has instructed him to sell the schoolgirls.
“I abducted your girls. I will sell them in the market, by Allah, Allah has instructed me to sell them, they are his property and I will carry out his instructions,” Abubakar Shekau said in the video, standing in-front of an armored personnel carrier with two masked militants wielding AK-47s on either side of him.
Women who daughters were abducted have held a number of protests in the capital near the presidential Palace. It was reported on Monday that President Goodluck Jonathan’s wife, Patience Jonathan ordered the arrest of the leaders of the women calling for the government to speed up process to rescue the girls.
In the 57- minute-long recording Shekau spoke of the students who had been abducted from her school in Chibok in the northeast of the country three weeks ago. Previously, there had been reports that some of the hostages had been forced to marry across the border to Chad and Cameroon for twelve dollars (ca. nine euros ) . Among the hostages were able to escape so far 53 girls , 223 are according to the police still at the mercy of their captors .
Boko Haram has been fighting for years for an Islamic state in the predominantly Muslim north of Nigeria and regularly perpetrated attacks on police, army and authorities , but also to schools and churches. The name Boko Haram translates as ” Western education is sin.”

The White House spokesman, Jay Carney said President Barack Obama was being briefed by his national security team who has been monitoring developments since the abduction.
“The president has been briefed several times and his national security team continues to monitor the situation there closely. The state department has been in regular touch with the Nigerian government about what we might do to help support its efforts to find and free these young women. We view what has happened there as an outrage and a terrible tragedy,” Mr. Carney said.
Six senators were also reported to have introduced a resolution supporting the Nigerian people and calling for the immediate return of the girls.
From all indications, it seems that the US is ready to intervene for the first time since Boko Haram began their insurgency in 2009.
Social commentators in Nigeria have said that the government has been very slow in responding to the abduction.
But the government has said that the security forces are still searching for the girls and will free the girls soon.
Many political analysts in Nigeria have accused President Jonathan of handling the Boko Haram crisis poorly. They say the army is poorly equipped to engage Boko Haram, making Boko Haram always gaining the upper hand over the military.
Almost 7,000 people have been killed while dozens and dozens of people have been left injured since Boko Haram began their militancy in 2009.
