The President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko wants a ceasefire in eastern Ukraine. “We should set this week the fire,” Poroshenko said, according to Interfax news agency on Sunday in Kiev.
Also at the weekend, there had been fighting between government troops and pro-Russian separatists in eastern Ukraine. According to Interfax, the new head of state now said on Sunday at a meeting of the Contact Group for the implementation of its peace plan announced: “Every day, die of the people, any day on which Ukraine paid such a high price is unacceptable.”
Poroshenko was sworn in until Saturday as the fifth President of Ukraine. “I do not want war, and I do not want revenge. I want peace, and I want that it comes to peace,” he had said in his first speech as head of state. Then he had the separatists offered concessions for a peace settlement. If they lay down their arms, he would grant them immunity and a free passage to Russia.
When traveling to the crisis area Poroshenko will seek the dialogue. A federalization of the country, as they suggest pro-Russian separatists, he refused. However, he wanted the Donetsk region to introduce a “plan for decentralization of powers” and the people guarantee the right to speak the Russian language. The separatists have so far shown unimpressed by Poroschenkos approximation.
With its announcement Poroshenko confirmed his pro-European stance and his willingness to improve relations with Moscow. The United States and Germany had hoped for a relaxation in eastern Ukraine for days.
Russian President Vladimir Putin had urged her to end the use of the Ukrainian army in the east of the country. He had previously even arranged the tightened security measures at the border with Ukraine in order to prevent the further penetration of armed men in the crisis region.
Also in the dispute over the price of Russian gas supplies and the billion debt Kiev in Moscow it continues: The talks will be continued on Monday evening in Brussels. On Tuesday an ultimatum of the Russian state company Gazprom expires.
