Her competitor Trump, meanwhile, can boast a million-dollar donation from tech billionaire Musk.
Around three weeks before the US election, the Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris is giving her first interview to the conservative television channel Fox News. The conversation with moderator Bret Baier is to be broadcast this evening at 6 p.m. local time (midnight CEST), the channel, which is considered the mouthpiece of the Republicans, announced.
It is Harris’ first major television interview with a conservative medium since she was officially chosen as the Democratic candidate in August. Since then, the 59-year-old has spoken to CNN, CBS and ABC News, among others, which are considered to be more liberal and tend to be more favorable to the Democrats. After she was chosen as the candidate, Harris was accused, especially in the early stages, of avoiding interviews and thus avoiding critical questions.
Trump reacts indignantly
Baier is the chief political moderator at Fox News. His focus is on political analysis, interviews and news. His show “Special Report with Bret Baier” is broadcast daily and is, according to the station, one of the most watched formats. Baier’s role differs from that of the station’s commentators such as Sean Hannity or Laura Ingraham, who openly promote the Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump and sometimes criticize his opponents with dubious reports.
Trump’s criticism of the personnel selection followed promptly. Baier is “often very lenient towards the left”. He himself would have preferred a “more stubborn journalist”, Trump added, but Fox News has “become so weak and soft towards the Democrats” and lets their statements stand unchallenged, so that none of this matters anymore anyway. During the election campaign, however, Trump always claims to be committed to the right to free speech.
Musk donates millions to Trump
In the final stages of the election campaign, both candidates are trying to mobilize their voters once again. Trump can score a huge financial injection. Tech billionaire and Tesla boss Elon Musk donated around $75 million to a political organization that supports Trump in just three months. This is according to documents published by the US Election Commission on Tuesday.
According to the documents, the majority of the money, around $72 million, went to the “America PAC” between July and September. Musk was the only donor to the group during this period. The organization focuses on mobilizing voters in contested states. Musk, who said he had voted for Democratic presidential candidates in the past, took a clear step to the right.
Harris fights for black voters
Harris, on the other hand, is trying to score points with black voters. In one of her rare radio interviews, she defended her record as a prosecutor and spoke out in favor of the decriminalization of marijuana and police reform. “It’s just not true,” Harris said when asked whether she had arrested a disproportionate number of African-American men during her time as San Francisco district attorney. She has even been described as “one of the most progressive prosecutors” in marijuana cases.
Polls show that fewer black voters support Harris than US President Joe Biden in the 2020 election against Donald Trump. Her campaign and allies such as Barack Obama are working to win back that support in Michigan and other key states with narrow majorities. One of the biggest challenges is the Trump team’s disinformation aimed at black voters, Harris said. “They’re trying to scare people because they know they have nothing else to bet on.”
Biden: “What’s wrong with the guy?”
She also receives support from US President Joe Biden, who made fun of Trump after a bizarre performance. “He stood on stage and danced for 30 minutes,” Biden said at an event in Philadelphia. “I’m serious. What’s wrong with the guy?”
Biden also called Trump a “loser” and immediately added: “He is a loser in everything he does.” A campaign event held by the Republican on Monday in the state of Pennsylvania was ended early due to extreme heat – also because two people collapsed and had to be treated by doctors. Trump did not leave the stage immediately, but asked the director to play the song YMCA loudly. He then asked for a whole series of other songs, to which he repeatedly danced somewhat stiffly.
