Now it is Chris Rock’s mother, Rose Rock, who finally expressed how she felt when she watched the scuffle that happened in a matter of seconds between the prince of Bel Air and his son, a scene that left the world in shock.
In the interview she gave on Friday to the local South Carolina station, WIS-TV, Rose Rock revealed step by step how she felt when she witnessed, along with the rest of the audience, the violent incident that her beloved son Chris experienced in front of the cameras.
Her reaction now joins all those who have already spoken about it, including her son, Will Smith’s own mother and the actor’s wife, as well as a long host of celebrities. The world-famous actor, who took a golden Hollywood statuette that same night after the altercation, resigned from the Academy shortly after seeing the course that events took around the scandal that he himself starred in.
At first, Chris’s mom thought the incident was staged, part of the show, but as she watched the scene in front of the television at her home, she realized it was real. That’s when Will Smith started using profanity, “obscenities”, she said exactly.
“When he slapped Chris, Will slapped all of us. He slapped me too,” she said, “because if you hurt my son, you hurt me.” She added that “nobody listened to what he said anymore, because everyone was sitting there, like thinking ‘but what was that?'”
Chris Rock’s mother’s statements coincided in time with Will Smith’s first public appearance far away from his world, in an exotic destination where he apparently traveled to rediscover himself.
“You reacted to the little look your wife gave you, and you go and make her day, because she was thoughtful instead of laughing,” she declared, thinking of Will Smith, Mrs. Rose Rock to Billie Jean Shaw of WIS.
