Mercedes takes electric cars off the market
Competition stimulates business. But too many rivals – and then even from your own company – are then probably not so good: You now fall victim to a luxury car from Mercedes. After a half year.
Out for the Mercedes EQS 350: The luxury sedan with electric drive only came onto the market last November. With the base model, Mercedes wanted to bring the entry-level price of its electrified S-Class below the 100,000 euro mark. Now, just six months later, the EQS 350 has already disappeared from the range. But why?
By the way: EQS and the combustion engine counterpart, the S-Class, are the first cars in Germany with permission for level 3 autonomous driving. class: 5,950 euros, EQS: 8,840 euros).
Why hardly anyone wanted the car
The model was not in demand, explains the manufacturer, who apparently got bogged down with the equipment. Because if you take a closer look at the Mercedes range of electric cars, you will hardly find any arguments in favor of the EQS 350 – but there are some against it:
The EQS 350 offered 215 kW (292 hp), a 90 kWh battery and a range of 626 kilometers, all for around 98,000 euros.
However, the EQS 450+ has a more powerful engine (245 kW/333 hp), a significantly larger battery (107.8 kWh) and the range is correspondingly significantly higher at 768 kilometers. And the whole thing for around 107,000 euros – an extra charge that many people in this segment can and want to treat themselves to.
On top of that, the EQE 350 (an electric E class) now offers similar values to the canceled EQS. With a price of around 70,000 euros, it is 28,000 euros cheaper. And on top of that, its buyers receive an environmental bonus of 7,500 euros.
In short: Nobody needs the EQS 350. And according to the customers, Mercedes has now also recognized this.
The basic variant of the series is now the EQS 450+, the top model EQS 580 4Matic with all-wheel drive, 385 kW (524 hp) and a range of 671 kilometers costs around 140,000 euros.
